“Ask any traveler who has been to India, and they will tell you – it is like no other place in the world. The land and its people jolt every one of your five senses and stay in your heart forever.” So opens the book, To India With Love: From New York to Mumbai.
A response to the Mumbai bombings of 2008, To India With Love was conceived by fellow New Yorkers – jewelry designer and entrepreneur Waris Ahluwalia; fashion exec. Tina Bhojwani; and businessman Mortimer Singer – who pledged a portion of the profits from this “ode to India’” to the families affected by the tragedy.
Ahluwalia felt the international media coverage of the Mumbai terror attacks was inadequate and decided to address that void. “It played like a mini-series. Compelling, horrific, and then it vanished, and the blame game started.” Reaching into their rolodexes, the editors called on friends and friends of friends to capture India’s splendor through the eyes of an eclectic set of celebrities.
The result is a visual feast. To India With Love is a scrapbook valentine to India’s resilience. Famous contributors include Adrien Brody, Natalie Portman, Anil Kapoor, and Padma Lakshmi; directors Wes Anderson, James Ivory and Karan Johar; designers Rachel Roy, Kenneth Cole and Tarun Tahiliani as well as legendary CEO’s Ratan Tata and Mukesh Ambani. Paired with personal photographs, the stories convey each person’s unique attachment to India.
Our favorites include director James Ivory recounting his life-changing first meeting with Ismail Merchant; Fareed Zakaria’s nod “to the power of ordinary people”; and Padma Lakshmi’s wedding caravan tale affirming the inclusiveness of Indian culture.
