The Women Who Make You Come Back For More

You’re immersed in the (semi) plot line of a Bollywood movie. Boy has met girl. Boy has lost girl. Boy is chasing girl and so on.

Suddenly you’re transported to a bar/a field/atop train and the most beautiful and scantily clad woman appears in front of you gyrating her hips to a mesmerizing beat. No, you’re not dreaming a very pleasant dream – you’re watching an “item number”.

The iconic item number featuring an actress who has nothing to do with the film and who only appears for the purpose of stirring…. (ahem) emotions and feeding the movie marketing machine.

And it works. Once is not enough. You find yourself wanting more. You’ll even watch the movie again in fast forward to see this siren’s call.

After all, who doesn’t want to see Helen/Bipasha/Malaika move fast and furiously for a full 5 minutes.

We could continue to wax poetic, but sometimes a good hip shaking is worth a thousand words.

Then again, when isn’t it.

Here are 5 of our favorites, plus one for good measure.
Chaya Chaya from Dil Se

Beedi from Omkara

Kajra Re from Bunty aur Babli

Munni Badnaam from Dabanng

Sheila Ki Jawani from Tees Maar Khan

And for good measure, and because we could never leave out Helen – Yeh Mera Dil from Don (1978)
