Khan Market that is.
Named after Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, the Muslim spiritual and political leader famous for his non-violent opposition to the British Rule and close friends with Mahatma Gandhi, Khan Market is a favorite of Delhi locals and expats.
When asked to name a favorite place in the Market, the answer people give is often a momentary pause followed by an exuberant outpouring of places to go, eat and shop.
We had to see for ourselves and recently took 4 trips in as many days to find out what the fuss is all about. After eating and shopping our way through the complex, we came up with the top 5 reasons to love Khan Market (David Letterman, pay attention).
1. Amrapali – The jewelry store celebrities favorite. (Just ask Jada Pinket or Hillary Swank.) Known for their killer Indian jewelry both affordable and not so affordable. We scored a pair of fabulous turquoise earings that make every outfit Indo-cool.
2. Anokhi – the place to get your block-print kurta on. And if you’re feeling especially bohemian, you can stock up on silk harem pants. We grabbed one in every color to wear with a tank and heels when we’re feeling especially “I Dream of Jeannie.”
4. Amici – the exemplary Italian cafe started by owner Andrea aka Aftab. The pasta took us back to a little cafe we once visited in Rome. An absolute must visit when Indian food has you yearning for a little masala respite.
5. Ogaan – for its designer collection. We loved owner/in-house designer Kavita Bhartia’s line of old Indian images made new via digital print on jersey.
If you can’t make it to Delhi, make sure you send your friends and family. This is one corner shop you don’t want to miss. Treasures galore await you beyond the fab 5 above. And let us know if you have favorites we’ve missed on our facebook page.
