It’s May, the month of the Cannes Film Festival. In that spirit, we’re continuing our month long look at filmmakers and their personal stories.
He’s lives between the hyphens.
As in, writer-director-producer-furniture designer-best-dressed man about town. Meet Mozez Singh, renaissance man.
Born into an industrialist family in Delhi, Singh’s path was set early and clearly toward the family business. But things changed when he left India and went to college at Tufts University in Boston. It was there Singh found his own voice and the passion to create.
A 5 year stint at Tommy Boy records in New York working in the music video production department solidified his preferred creative medium – filmmaking. He said “he felt complete” when he walked on a set.
Upon his move back to Mumbai he started his own production company. And he hasn’t looked back since.
He recently completed a collaborative film on India’s biggest electronica music festival, Sunburn, which will come out at the end of the year.
He’s headed to the Cannes Film Festival – adorned of course in Dior Homme – for Peddlers, a film he co-produced with Anurag Kashyap and Guneet Monga. One of 4 Indian films in Cannes this year, Singh says the credit goes to Guneet Monga for her unrelenting fortitude and Vasan Bala, director, for his amazing story.
On the near horizon is his own feature film scheduled to head to pre-production in August. Set between Delhi and Punjab, it’s a coming of age story about a boy from the heartland of Punjab.
Like any good Renaissance man, film is just one aspect of his creative expression. Two weeks ago he launched ‘Mughal Pop‘ a furniture line in collaboration with the Good Earth stores.
He wanted to re-think the Mughal era and modernize it while retaining its ethos. His clever use of modern materials – lucite and acrylic – succeed in giving the work a relevant and contemporary feel. The pieces feel more art than furniture.
Perhaps that’s the common thread to Singh’s work – it’s all art. Whether it’s his films, product designs, personal wardrobe. The world is a more beautiful place because of him.
Mozez will be bringing us the inside scoop from Cannes next week when he joins Anurag Kashyap, Guneet Monga and Vasan Bala on the red carpet. Stay tuned.
