M.I.A., a Must Read Book and Some Masala

The Bad Girl’s Back

So she flipped 100 million people the bird during the Superbowl. We wonder why that’s a surprise. This is M.I.A. we’re talking about. She’s known to push boundaries and stir things up. Her latest video is no exception. Shot in Morocco and directed by Romain-Gavras, “Bad Girls” gives us M.I.A.’s lady gangsta fantasy – in the Middle East.  M.I.A. brings swagger life and some Bhangra beats to a landscape unfamiliar to the West. And somehow she succeeds in making the unknown familiar. This gives joyriding a whole new meaning. Warning, don’t try this at home.    Watch the video here.

This is no Poverty Porn

Pulitzer prize winner Katherine Boo’s first novel is a powerful account of life in the Annawadi slums in Mumbai. This is no poverty porn. Boo was moved to document the lives of Annawadi’s residents after she married her Indian husband and lived for three years amongst the subjects of her book. Deeply researched and brilliantly written, Boo tells an intimate story of real people in dire conditions, and the complex lives they navigate. She gives us a glimpse of a part of the “global economy” often left out of the conversation. Read more here.
