NY based fashion designer Tina Tandon, was at India’s first Resort Fashion Week last month in Goa. She sent us this piece from the Street.
The ultimate beach town in India, and much sought after New Year’s Eve party place, Goa, now has become the latest destination for International buyers to see the best Indian designers have to offer in Resort wear – a category growing in the Indian market. India recently launched its first ever Resort Fashion week, held from Dec. 7th to 11th at the brand new Grand Hyatt in Goa, which I had the fortunate opportunity to attend.
International buyers, press, media, and fashion professionals were invited from around the globe. It was a relaxing, fun, party, and high fashion atmosphere all in one. I found it hard to juggle the time between watching the shows, sunbathing by the beach or by the gorgeous massive seamless pools, pampering myself at the spa, and running around town checking out local markets for inspiration.
14 designers showcased their collection at the event, with a grand finale by Manish Malhotra and Shantanu & Nikhil. The showcased collections included a wide range of take on Resort, with linen crisp looks in bright colors by Narendra Kumar, to exotic caftans by Pria Katria Puri, to party cocktail dresses in structured and bright color-blocked dresses by Shantanu & Nikhil and resort version of Lenghas, Kalidars and Saris by Manish Malhotra. It was a surprise not to see a celeb walk the ramp for Manish at this show, but the event attended by many top industry professionals – press and media – did see a good dose of Bollywood glitterati and socialites. Neha Dupia was seen checking out one of the shows and Sushmita Sen walked the ramp for Shantanu & Nikhil. Others spotted at the event, and seen partying at the grand finale beach bash, included Ashmit Patel, Vijay Mallaya, Irrfan Khan, Shilpa Shetty ‘s hubby Raj Kundra and Anushka Manchanda among others.
It was a fashion week unlike any other, with beach, sun, great food, good parties, and a good dose of fashion. The Grand Finale held at the Marbela beach was created out to be a beach fashion festival feel, complete with live dance performances, drum artists, fireworks, and artist group Designer Hippies – joined by a host of dancers and performers. They had the crowd dancing to their electrifying beats as they played into the night to mark the end of a stunning five day fashion extravaganza.
I was impressed with the interaction this atmosphere created between the designers and the buyers, press, and media…a casual, low key, fun approach to some serious business. The attendance of buyers although not huge the first time, the Goa fashion week, and Resort wear category is sure to become bigger and bigger in the coming years.
